Curriculum

ELA (Reading/Spelling/Writing/Language):  We use the Harcourt basal reader, literature units, and author studies for reading.  Students are busy everyday with a variety of literacy skills.  Each day is filled with many opportunities to read:  shared reading, poems, big books, guided reading in a small group setting, and Accelerated Reading.  One of my goals is to develop a love of reading in all children!

We will be using a spelling program that will enable the students to participate in a word study.  We will be able to incorporate the Saxon phonics with the spelling program as we look at blends, digraphs, diphthongs, etc.  These skills will carry over into our writing program and will help us become lifelong spellers as well as writers.

Our writing program will focus on the six traits of writing.  We will focus on one trait per six weeks and they will build upon each other.  We will work on the conventions of writing all year.  These are sentence structure, punctuation, and grammar.  We will have a writing activity each day.

Social Studies:   We will incorporate social studies along with our reading units.  Some of these will include American heroes, Tall Tales, States etc.
